The Royal Forest Department, in collaboration with Ratchaburi Holding, invites applications to the community forest contest under the 2014 ‘Love the Forest and the Community’ program

The ‘Love the Forest and the Community’ program, which has entered the 7th year of its effort to conserve community forests,  has invited community forests nationwide to join the national community forest contest to win HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's Trophy. The initiative is aimed at promoting  community participation in driving forest development and expand Thailand's green areas.

According to Mr. Pongdith Potchana, Chief Executive Officer, Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding PLC (Ratchaburi Holding), “The Royal Forest Department, in collaboration with Ratchaburi Holding, has undertaken the 7th consecutive year of  2014 ‘Love the Forest and the Community’ program  to boost community participation to conserve community forests  and support the creation and expansion of the tripartite network including the government sector, the private sector and communities to protect the country's community forests, create the forest ecology and boost the sustainable forest development. The Love the Forest and Community program is committed to promoting participation among community members under the "Sustainable Forest and Community Benefits" concept via a wide range of activities including the national community forest contest, the seminar for community forest network leaders and the Klayim youth camp designed to boost the awareness of the environmental and natural resource conservation among Thai youth who will grow up to be leading figures in the future."

"The community forest contest will provide the community forest models and learning platform for other communities. This year, application periods for the contest are open from February 1 until April 30, 2014 and the judging committee’s site visits for examination and selection represented by the Royal Forest Department and Ratchaburi Holding will be held between May to August 2014. The awards winners will be announced in September 2014.  The winner of National Community Forest Award will receive the HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s trophy, an honorary sign and a BHT 200,000 forest conservation fund. The three runners-up of National Community Forest and the Best Community Forest Award for "The use of local wisdom from the benefits of community forests" with prizes of BHT 100,000 forest conservation fund each, 68 provincial model community forest prizes with a BHT 25,000 support fund each and 68 consolation prizes with a BHT 10,000 support fund  each. There are 141 prizes in total," concluded Pongdith. 

In the past, the Love the Forest and the Community program 2008 – 2013  has granted the annual national community forest awards to the following community forests, respectively i.e. the Khao Wong Community Forest, Amphoe Nong Bua Rawe, Chaiyaphum province; the Baan Ta Pa Pao Community Forest,  Amphoe Mae Tha, Lamphun; Baan Huay Rai Burapa Community Forest, Amphoe Nong Wua so, Udon Thani province; Baan Klang Community Forest, Amphoe Muang, Pangnga province;  Baan Huay Sapan Samakkee Community Forest, Amphoe Phanom Thuan, Karnchanaburi province; and Baan Dong Huay Yen Community Forest in Amphoe Ban Hong, Lamphun province. The six winners are community forest models with leading community forest management and development plans that boost public participation for national forests and environmental conservation aim at creation of the community benefits in accordance with the sufficiency economy philosophy.

Interested community forests can contact and apply at the “Forest Resource Management offices nationwide” or download the application forms at  www.forest.go.th or www.ratch.co.th .
