The Royal Forest Department joins with Ratchaburi Holding to select the winners of the ‘2012 Love the Forest and the Community’ program

Bangkok – 29 August 2012 – The Royal Forest Department, in partnership with Ratchaburi Holding have selected the winners of the ‘Love the Forest and the Community’ program. The national winner will receive the HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn trophy and a 200,000 baht Community Forest Conservation Fund.

Mr. Prayut Lorsuwansiri, Deputy Director General, Royal Forest Department as the National Community Forest Contest Committee Chairman of the ‘Love the Forest and the Community’ program offered an update on the progress of the program.  He indicated that the Royal Forest Department, in partnership with Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding PCL, have implemented the program for 5 years now. This year, there were almost 1,000 community forests nationwide  participating in the contest. The national committee consisting of representatives from the Royal Forest Department and Ratchaburi Holding considered and selected the best community forest at national level and the best community forests for ‘Sustainable Development’ in terms of social and economic dimension, natural resource sustainable usage and energy conservation.

The national award winner will receive the HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn trophy and a 200,000 baht Community Forest Conservation Fund. The four Best Regional Awards winners will receive honorary plaques presented by the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, and a 100,000 baht Community Forest Conservation Fund. The best community forest for ‘Sustainable Development’ will receive honorary plaques presented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and a 100,000 baht Community Forest Conservation Fund. The award presentation ceremony will be held on 20 September 2012.

The four community forests, which were shortlisted for the National Award are 1)The Baan Mee Sook community forest in Tak province; 2) Baan Huay Sapan Samakkee community forest in Kanchanaburi province; 3) Baan Tad Rin Tong community forest in Chaiyaphum province; 4) Baan Tham Peung community forest in Suratthani province. The four shortlisted community forests for the best community forest for ‘Sustainable Development’ award are 1) Baan Den Pattana community forest in Nan province; 2) Baan Khao Yai community forest in Chonburi province; 3) Baan Poo Mak Keng community forest in Mukdahan; 4) Suan Somdet Princess Chulabhorn community forest in Nakhon Si Thammarat.


Mrs. Boontiva Dansamasatid, Executive Vice President-Corporate, Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding PCL and a member of the committee, said, the committee finished the audit of the eight selected community forests and the award is under consideration. Each community forest is different in terms of geography, but they share the outstanding characteristics that is the strong spirit of the communities in taking care of their forests. The communities realize the benefit and value of forest. These community forests have inspired and encouraged the company to maintain its focus on promoting the forest conservation. The company also seriously supports the Royal Forest Department to expand the forest network to reach a target of 21,000 community forests nationwide. The company appreciates all the community forests that have joined the ‘Love the Forest and the Community’ program and would like to praise all of them for their dedication in to rehabilitating forests so that all of us have plenty of water, food and fresh air. 

The community forest contest has been undertaken since 2008 and this year marks the fifth year of the initiative. Its awards are divided into five levels of 138 prizes. There is one National Award; four Best Regional Awards; one Yearly Special Award; 66 Provincial Awards; and 66 Honorable Awards. Moreover, the other major activities of the program are seminars for the network of community forest leaders to share experiences about sustainable community forest management and the Kla Yim youth camp that encourage youth to continue to strengthen community forest conservation.
